They envisioned a quick, casual restaurant with wholesome and tasty food choices at a reasonable price. All of the items at Cafe Nostimo can be packaged to go and takeout is also an option.
The menu features many Greek favorites including Avgolemono, a creamy and zesty egg-lemon soup with chicken and rice; Moussaka, layers of eggplant, potatoes and seasoned ground beef topped with bechamel sauce; and Keftethes, traditional Greek meatballs. Traditional pastries, gyros and souvlaki are also featured.
All of the food is prepared in-house with fresh ingredients, including the meat, which is cut and marinated on-site.
"The thing that gives me the greatest amount of pride is putting out a product people enjoy," Dean Zottos said.
Nancy agreed.
"Walking through the dining room and hearing people exclaim about the food makes you feel good," Nancy said.
The warm brown tones of the restaurant walls are separated by a strip of bright blue tile, and there is a mix of American and Greek music. The accessibility and ample parking at Madison Village at 72 Mirona Road appealed to the Zottos. Dean also liked the location's proximity to Route 1 and the convenience for people seeking takeout.
The response from patrons has been very positive, Zottos said. A grand opening is being held at the restaurant on Feb. 16.
Zottos became involved with St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church when he moved to the Portsmouth area eight years ago and quickly became involved in the festival.
Nancy said she thought this would give her husband his "restaurant fix," but it just fed the bug.
"It gave me a chance to see a really diverse community with a true appreciation of our style of cooking," Zottos said. "There are a lot of great restaurants in Portsmouth; this is a niche we have here."
Zottos said he would like to open other locations around the Seacoast in the future.
Cafe Nostimo is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for lunch and dinner.
